WONG & PARTNERS HIRES IP SPECIALIST FROM MALAYSIA RIVAL

Wong & Partners, the Malaysia member firm of Baker McKenzie, has hired Celia Cheah as a partner to bolster its intellectual property (IP) practice. Cheah, who joins from Christopher & Lee Ong, brings more than two decades of IP-related expertise to the firm.

“As technology surges ahead and regulations try to keep pace, navigating IP law is becoming ever more challenging,” Mark Lim, managing partner at Wong & Partners told Asia Business Law Journal. “Strategic hires like Celia help ensure that we are well-positioned to meet our clients’ growing needs.”

Cheah most recently served as head of IP and intangible assets at Christopher & Lee Ong. Prior to joining the firm in April 2024, she worked at partner level for local firms such as LAW Partnership, Zaid Ibrahim & Co, Tay & Partners and Shearn Delamore & Co. She advised clients in sectors including food and beverage, consumer goods and retail, luxury goods and pharmaceuticals on issues such as registration, licensing, franchising and brand strategy.

Admitted to practice law as an advocate and solicitor in Malaysia in 2000, Cheah brings more than two decades of experience helping clients with the creation, protection, commercialisation and enforcement of various IP rights, including trademarks, patents, industrial designs and copyright. She is also a registered trademarks and industrial designs agent.

“Celia has built a comprehensive practice in the non-contentious intellectual property space. Her role at the firm will be to help drive this area of our IP practice forward,” said Lim.
